Bow Front Cabinet

Adapting and converting antique cabinets is not a new idea. In recent years, some stereo consoles were converted to cabinets with mixed results. The key in any conversion is to allow for enough open area inside to rearrange as needed. In today's constantly changing mix of technology, you don't want to be left with a cabinet interior that's 1/2 shorter than the piece you wish to insert. In the case of this cabinet, the interior only required movement of the lower shelf to allow for the insertion of a large screen TV along with other modern amenities. With the doors closed, it's merely a beautiful antique centerpiece in the family room.

Even before we started, this was a beautiful cabinet--though a little too glossy. Several issues made a total restoration worthwhile for our client.

Finish on the hardware was also faded.

The base had damaged and/or missing detail.

One of the drawers was particularly in need of attention. Note the missing left molding and worn off section of lower molding. Not shown are the worn drawer frames which allowed the drawers to wobble around and slide in too far.

The Lift molding was replicated and the lower piece repaired to match the profile of the existing molding. Additional support was added to the drawer tracks and cabinet interior to allow for smooth operation of the drawers.

The finishing process was the most involved of the entire project. First step was to strip off the existing finish.

Once the old finish was removed from interior and exteror surfaces, the next step was to prep for staining.

After the stain was added, some enhancement was required. The client was looking to give this walnut woodwork a cherry flavor to match other woodwork in their home.

After the color enhancement, several clear coats of finish were added to achieve the desired appearance.

Hardware was polished to add to the richness.

With all steps complete, it was placed in the home as a fancy entertainment unit--the centerpiece of their family room.
